Portrait of Marta Ruiz

Interview · p. 48

"I design the stair first."

Marta Ruiz founded her practice in Barcelona in 2017 after eight years in larger offices. We asked her ten questions; here are five.

Why do you start with the stair?
Because it's the only room everyone in the house uses every day. If the stair is generous and full of light, the rest of the house follows.
What does a small practice do better?
Listen. I meet every client and every builder myself, and I'm on site every week.
Which project are you proudest of?
Forty social homes on a narrow street in Poblenou. Every flat has two orientations and a balcony big enough for a table.
What do you read?
Novels with good descriptions of houses, and building regulations — honestly, both are useful.
What's next?
A small library in a village in the Pyrenees, and a chair I've been redrawing for three years.
