The project

Three centuries of layers, carefully read.

When we first visited, the masseria had been empty for forty years. Later additions had closed the loggia, blocked the cisterns and covered the star vaults with cement plaster. We spent six months surveying every wall before drawing a single new line.

The restoration removed what harmed the building and kept what told its story. The loggia was reopened, the cisterns now collect rainwater for the garden, and the vaults breathe again under hand-mixed lime. New interventions — a staircase, bathrooms, a kitchen — are in oak and steel, clearly of our time and fully reversible.
