The work
Letting the creek wander again.
For sixty years the creek ran in a straight ditch beside a logging road. We removed the road, placed 400 large logs back in the channel and let winter floods find the old meanders.
The slopes were planted in patches, not rows: clusters of conifers, alder along the water, open glades left for elk. Volunteers from three nearby towns planted half the trees over four winters.
